Programs

GOAL provides girl-centered programs, training, and expertise to organizational partners serving girls in early adolescence in all communities. GOAL designs and field tests its own experiential, research-based programs that address the social, emotional, intellectual, and developmental needs of adolescent girls, helping girls develop the skills to successfully navigate the challenges of adolescence. GOAL shapes a future generation of strong, competent, and resilient women able to handle life's challenges with flexibility and a solid grounding in their own identity.

Custom Workshops and Presentations
GOAL will work with your organization to design a half or full day program around a specific girl-centered theme or topic. For more information, please contact Gail Rothman.

The GOAL Girls' Group
Based on our unique, experiential curriculum, the GOAL Girls' Group uses interactive activities as a jumping off point to discussions, which allow girls a safe place to explore the issues in their lives. All GOAL Girls' Groups are facilitated by GOAL trained female facilitators who guide the girls through a process of self-discovery. Groups are limited to 12 participants per facilitator to insure that each girl is encouraged to speak up and participate.

GOAL Girls' Groups can be formatted to fit the needs of your organization and can take place as part of an after-school program, in the evenings or on weekends. Modules can be done individually or back to back throughout the year to maximize the depth of learning and growth. Each module consists of eight weekly sessions that are 75 minutes in length.

For more information on our ongoing girls' groups, please contact Zola Shannon-Mullen.

GOAL Half-Day Workshops
-Teacher Workshop
Girls do best in school when they are not inhibited by low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. Teachers and school personnel can have a tremendous influence on girls' experience in school and how they see themselves as learners. Join us for an examination of the ways that girls learn and how incidents in the classroom can impact their view of themselves and their success in school.

- Youth Worker Training
This workshop focuses on youth development with an emphasis on girls' development during adolescence. It is similar in content to our Teacher Workshop with a focus on how girls interact and thrive in social settings outside of the school environment.

- Mother-Daughter Workshop
Although mothers (or primary caregivers) are often he most influential individuals in developing confidence and self-esteem in girls, this relationship can be mired in conflict and misunderstanding. Our mother/daughter workshop is designed to improve communication and understanding among mothers and daughters. Through experiential activities including role-plays, games and discussions, participants will acquire tools and strategies to assist them in improving their relationships.

For more information on the workshops described above, please contact Zola Shannon-Mullen.

GOAL Interactive Presentations (2 hours)
- Girls and the Media
Media images have become increasingly powerful and provocative. This interactive presentation examines the ways that the media portrays girls and young women and the impact these images have on girls' development. Body image, the sexualization of young girls and the lack of appropriate role models for girls will be discussed. What can girls, parents, teachers and youth advocates do to combat the negative effects of these images? Join us for a lively discussion and interactive analysis of the media. This presentation is available in versions suitable for use with groups of girls, parent groups or a combination.

- Girls and Social Aggression
From an early age, girls are socialized to express anger and aggression in very specific ways. Social aggression is the term used to describe how girls manipulate the status and relationships of other girls. This interactive presentation will look at some of the ways that social aggression manifests itself and provide some strategies for responding to these behaviors. This presentation is available in versions suitable for use with groups of girls, parent groups or a combination.

- Growing with our Girls
Raising daughters today requires an understanding of the different stages of girls' growth and development. An understanding of how girls communicate and how they learn best is essential for parents and other adults that want to create a nurturing environment in which girls can grow and thrive. Gain insight into the world of girls and learn specific strategies for raising strong, confident and resilient daughters. This presentation is appropriate for parents, teachers and youth workers.
