| "We have a problem in society
today; despite increasing equality and opportunity for women in all arenas,
young girls between the ages of eight and sixteen are losing their self-esteem,
self-confidence and self-worth. This pattern in the psychological development
of girls has been documented by many reliable resources."
--Paula Levine, PhD
The curriculum for GOAL (Girls' Opportunities for Adventure and Leadership)
has been developed by a multicultural team of psychotherapists, psychologists,
and educators. Particular attention has been paid to the issues that are
unique to the eleven to fourteen year old female adolescent.
Background
work includes the study of the psychological development of women, where
attention and respect is given to the role of relationship in female development,
as opposed to the approach of traditional psychology which presupposes
the necessity of a separate self before entering relationship.
In addition
to the more academic discipline of psychology, attention has been paid
to the tenor of the times in which these girls are developing--looking at
the conflicting messages that are being sent verbally, and non-verbally,
by both society and parents.
Because the GOAL experience is one that provides
an opportunity to explore diversity and differences, where girls of different
economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds explore self and self-in-relationship,
the curriculum also focuses on how to value and accommodate differences
and diversity.
