Going for the GOAL Luncheon 2003 Award Recipients
Shirley Franklin, our keynote speaker and Atlanta's first female mayor, is a tremendous role model for young girls in Atlanta today. Her ability to work with all the various constituents in a large urban city, and step forward and directly address difficult issues exemplifies some of the positive characteristics we would want any of our daughters to possess. Shirley has received many awards and honors, but perhaps her most notable accomplishment is bringing a sense of integrity to city government. She is a strong supporter of gender specific programming, and was one of GOAL's Honorary Chairpersons at its first fundraising event in 1998.

Mary Brown Bullock, the President of Agnes Scott College, is a tireless advocator for women's issues. As the President of a women's college, she serves as a daily reminder to all her students that as women we can aim high. During her seven years as president, enrollment at the college has increased by fifty percent, faculty has increased by one-third, fundraising has reached record levels, and a $120 million dollar building program is near completion. She leads by example and acts as a positive influence with her quiet, gentle strength.

Deborah Richardson is a powerful ally for every under-served girl in Atlanta. As the Executive Director of the Fulton County Juvenile Justice Fund and the Director of Program Development for the Fulton County Juvenile Court, she sees that gender-specific programming is strong and focused. She serves on the Boards of Directors of The Atlanta Women's Foundation and the Women's Policy Group. Deborah has been one of GOAL's cornerstones, as she shared her extensive knowledge in non-profit management as GOAL grew from an idea into an organization.

Claudia Gaines-Patton stands as a strong role model for girls aspiring to be in the field of marketing and public relations. She founded her own firm, The Headline Group, in 1982, which was acquired by Edelman in September 2002. She has received many awards in her field, including the Women in Communications "Award for Communications Excellence" in 1994. Claudia serves as American Cancer Society's Atlanta City Unit president, and is a board member for The Atlanta College of Art and Northside Hospital Foundation Board.
